This program is designed for
individuals with no proficiency in the target language. The main
objective of this survival course is to enable the student to
develop basic and useful skills in the target language through
the use of communication in everyday practical situations of a
social, logistical, and workplace nature, instead of a
structured lesson. The course prepares the student for life or a
short trip with survival language training and encourages the
student to utilize what they know without the preoccupation of
grammatical accuracy. This program is designed to return
the student to previous levels of proficiency, to strengthen and
enhance overall language abilities, and to prevent skill
deterioration. Similar to the familiarization course, this
lesson can be custom designed for listening and reading
comprehension, and survival, as well as, special job related
topics and skills. Completion of this course can be done on a
part-time basis or on-line. The goal of this program is to
provide the student with realistic situations encountered in
everyday life, not by way of a textbook learning plan. Although
the course does not involve language learning, it does focus on
imparting awareness of cultural characteristics and day-to-day
living in the target country. The student is introduced to
history, tradition, and customs, which may be unfamiliar to
foreigners. Custom designed, this course offers topics in the
following, but not limited to: general introduction to the
target country; elements of culture; intercultural dynamics;
conflict avoidance; gender (dynamics); customs; art; music;
food; ceremonies and rituals; family and kinship; marriage;
religion; dress or appearance; values; bias; and language. The
class is offered at least once a week.Familiarization
